“Team Manitoba 2018” returned August 25 from the 2018 Canada 55+ Games in Saint John, New Brunswick. The team of 88 participants ranging in age from 55 – 81 experienced the fun and friendly competition of the national Games in Saint John August 21-24. Husband and wife, Lawrence and Tammy Dyck from Roland were chosen to lead Team Manitoba as flag bearers in the Athletes Parade and into the Opening Ceremonies. Approximately 1,875 athletes from all across Canada participated in this year’s parade and Games.
Team Manitoba brought home an impressive (for our numbers) total of 43 medals: 18 Gold, 14 Silver & 11 Bronze
• Out of 70 1st-timers to the Games, 26 came home with medals.
• There were a couple events where MB was battling it out for Gold & Silver – womens pickleball & scrabble
• All 8 pickleball players came home with medals
• the slo-pitch team slugged it out with the home province team in the gold-silver final; Team MB fans were outnumbered by a bleacher full from a local daycare school cheering on the owner!
• the track athletes contributed 18/42 of the medal count.
Manitoba athletes participated in 12/20 events including 18-hole golf, duplicate bridge, cribbage, curling, pickleball, slo-pitch and track to name a few. This was also the third year for pickleball players and a MB hockey team.
Special events included the Opening ceremonies and Athletes parade on Tuesday, a traditional “Maritime Kitchen Party” and Closing dinner & dance on Friday. The eldest male and female athletes were also recognized at the Opening ceremonies. The Canada 55+ Games president also announced the Host Community for the 2020 Canada 55+ Games would be Kamloops, British Columbia.
Thanks again to Homestead Manitoba, out of Winnipeg for their generous sponsorship of this years’ team shirts.
All Team Manitoba participants need to be congratulated for qualifying for and participating in the 2018 Canada 55+ Games. They’re all winners… for proving you’re never too old for fun and games!
