There will be some new faces on and off the field as the Winkler Storm begin play in the premier division of the Manitoba Major Soccer League next Thursday.
Wes Hamm has taken over coaching duties after two years as assistant to Henry Enns. Enns has moved away from the sidelines to become president of the Storm. Former player Jakob Lepp will be assistant coach with Graham Corlett as the club manager.
Hamm said the club would have about the same lineup in midfield and at forward positions.
“We have lost three defenders, though. Eddie Wiens has moved to B.C., and we had a couple players from Otterburne who will not be back,” he said.
“We have been working out to get ready for the season. Some started indoors last November. That was quite casual, said Hamm, adding the club began some tougher indoor workouts in mid February.
“Right now there are 16 players on the roster,” he noted. “We still have some spots open. We’re taking our time deciding.”
Hamm said the club is aiming for higher placement in their division this season. He feels that with most of the players on the roster having another season of experience, they will step up with improved play.
“We are really excited. We have a good mix of people with those who are from here and those who have moved here.”
“The club has good skill and talent and we have had very strong growth,” he said. “We need to have patience in both the physical and mental approach to the game.”
Hamm is particularly happy to have talented striker David Duerksen returning.
“He was fourth in scoring last season. His play is getting so much better. He handles the ball well. He is seeing the field very well and is fast.”
In a recent exhibition match against NKMB at the Parkland pitch, Duerksen used his quick speed and anticipation to create some dangerous scoring chances.
Other clubs in the Premier division include Blue Blazers, United Weston, Southend Celtics, Sons of Italy SC, Maples Juventus, Lucania SC, Ital-Inter SC, Hellas SC and FC Lusitania.
