Ball season underway
High school sports are gearing up with the start of the fastpitch, baseball and track and field seasons.

High school sports are gearing up with the start of the fastpitch, baseball and track and field seasons.
Action began Monday with some lopsided games in Zone 4 girls fastpitch action.
In the west division, the Morden Thunder hammered the Carman Cougars 20 to 7, while the Portage Saints blanked the Miami Marlins 15-0. And in the east division, the MCI Blues beat the Sanford Sabres 9-2, while Altona’s W.C. Miller Aces won 12-2 over the Garden Valley Collegiate Zodiacs.
The girls fastpitch teams were back on the fields Wednesday with the Thunder at Portage, Carman at Miami, Sanford visiting Altona and MCI at Winkler.
In boys baseball on Tuesday, GVC hosted the Portage Trotters and Morden visited Altona for doubleheaders in boys baseball. The Zodiacs took the opener 8-6 but fell 10-1 in the second game. Altona took both ends of their meeting with Morden, 7-2 and 15-4.
Both Winkler and Morden took to the diamonds again Thursday with the Zodiacs hosting Sanford and the Thunder entertaining the Trotters.
On Fri., May 9, Garden Valley is hosting the Zodiacs Invitational track and field meet.
Action continues Thursday, May 15 with the Zone 4 high school track and field championships in Winkler.
In baseball action next week, the Aces are at Sanford and the Zodiacs at Morden on Mon., May 12.
In fastpitch action Monday, the Saints are at Morden for another meeting between the last year’s Zone 4 finalists, and the Marlins are at Carman. In east division action, the Zodiacs are in Gretna and the Aces in Sanford.
Fastpitch play continues Wednesday with the Saints in Miami and the Thunder in Carman in west division action. In the east, the Aces are in Winkler while the Sabres make the trip to Gretna. On Thursday, the Thunder are in Sanford and the Aces travel to Portage.
