The Pembina Valley Humane Society will kick off construction of its new animal shelter with an October 31 sod-turning.
The ceremony will take place next Saturday at 11 a.m. at 462 Jefferson St. in the Morden industrial park.
Work could begin once the society cleared its final planning hurdle this past week with Morden town council’s approval of a conditional use to allow the shelter in an industrial zone.
The contract for construction of the shelter was recently awarded to Upright Builders.
The proposed floor plan for the shelter includes 21 dog kennels and four cat rooms as well as a quarantine area, food preparation rooms and an administrative office.
In addition, many of the dog and cat rooms may have their own access door to outdoor enclosures.
The society at last report had over $240,000 committed toward construction of the shelter. It was estimated the total project cost will be close to $300,000, so the society secured an $80,000 loan for the balance of funds from the Access Credit Union.
Winkler, Morden and the R.M. of Stanley have jointly pledged to cover 20 per cent of the capital expense of the building up to a maximum of $50,000 - half from Morden and the remainder divided between Winkler and Stanley.
The new building fund has been growing with support from area municipalities including Morden ($25,000), Winkler ($12,500), RM of Stanley ($12,500), Carman ($5,000), RM of Dufferin ($5,000), Altona ($3,000), RM of Roland ($2,400) and RM of Thompson ($1,000).
Further funding may also be available from a range of sources including provincial support programs, charitable foundations and other sources, but the society continues to appeal for financial support not only towards the building fund but for other costs ranging from veterinarian services to furnishings and equipment. Donations can be mailed to the society at Box 414 Morden, MB., R6M 1K4. For more information, call 822-9413 or go to the society website at www.pvhsociety.ca.
Since March, the humane society has been operating via foster home placements.
